Over the past weeks, I’ve been reflecting deeply on how readiness — emotional, cognitive, and technical — shapes the rhythm of our work and the quality of our lives. With The Power of Ecosystem doHow® being my previous article, I explored how immersing myself in the realities of different stakeholders expands my wisdom and sharpens my influence.
Today, I continue my journey into the doHow® Technical Competencies with a capability that determines how effectively I convert effort into excellence — Methodologies doHow®, the last in the series on doHow® Readiness Assessment.
In my blog The Prosperity doHow® – A Simple Way to Keep Growing, I wrote that prosperity is built steadily, not suddenly — through readiness in three essential foundations:
- Emotional Competencies – how I relate with myself and others
- Cognitive Competencies – how I think, understand, and decide
- Technical Competencies – how I perform my craft with discipline and mastery
Together, they shape the doHow® Emotional and Rational Maturity Scales, helping me grow into someone wiser, more capable, and more dependable.
The doHow® Readiness Assessment then shows me where I stand today — and which area I must strengthen next.
Among the technical competencies, none accelerates growth, reduces waste, and boosts confidence more than Methodologies doHow®.
Understanding Methodologies doHow®
To me, Methodologies doHow® is the art of learning, internalising, and mastering structured ways of working — so I can solve problems faster, deliver results consistently, and improve with discipline.
Every industry moves on methodologies such as 5S, PDCA, A3 Problem Solving, 8D, Kaizen, TPM, SMED, Root Cause Analysis, Lean Thinking, Six Sigma, and many more in the doHow® Toolbox.
Every methodology is like a toolset — but tools work only in the hands of someone who has internalised their purpose, sequence, and spirit.
The secret to mastering Methodologies doHow® is simple yet profound:
“Internalise the methodology from A to Z — until every step becomes muscle memory.”
Because until a method sinks deep into my instincts, I remain a beginner.
And the moment it becomes natural, effortless, unconscious — I become a professional.
Mastery is not about knowing the method. Mastery is about embodying it. It is like learning to ride a bicycle. At first, I wobble. I overthink. I hesitate. But through repeated, rigorous practice, my body remembers the rhythm. Then, one day, the bicycle becomes an extension of me. That is when freedom begins. Methodologies are no different.
Like every doHow® capability, Methodologies doHow® evolves through seven levels — from simply using tools to designing and teaching methodologies that uplift organisations.
I have included the hierarchy level, in Brackets, where, in my experience, the corresponding maturity level becomes essential for being efficient and effective without unnecessary stress. Along with this, I have added a reflection question to stimulate deeper thinking, and more importantly, a practice activity to help master the level. Consistent practice over 8 to 14 weeks is usually needed to consciously program this into our subconscious, turning it into muscle memory—something we naturally live by and truly get by heart.
Methodologies doHow® Level 1 – Tool User (IL – Individual Leaders / Contributors)
At this first level, I pick up basic tools — checklists, templates, simple worksheets, forms, or standard formats.
Like a carpenter learning to use a hammer, I become comfortable with the basic instruments of my work.
Reflection Question:
Do I confidently use the basic tools required in my role?
Practice to Master:
Choose one tool you use often. Practice it daily for two weeks until it feels natural.
Hint:
Every expert was once a beginner who learned to use simple tools well.
Methodologies doHow® Level 2 – Careful Maintainer (IL – Individual Leaders / Contributors)
Here, I learn to maintain these tools properly — keeping them updated, clean, structured, and ready.
It is like sharpening a knife regularly — a small habit that prevents big frustrations.
Reflection Question:
Do I maintain my tools and templates so they are always ready for accurate use?
Practice to Master:
Spend ten minutes daily reviewing and updating one tool — with neatness, clarity, and accuracy.
Hint:
A well-maintained tool multiplies effectiveness.
Methodologies doHow® Level 3 – Issue Spotter (TL – Team Leaders of IL)
Now, I begin noticing where the method fails or where the tool isn’t used properly.
Like a mechanic with a trained ear, I detect the small signals that something is not right.
Reflection Question:
Do I spot deviations or improper use of methods before they become failures?
Practice to Master:
Review one completed task using the methodology. Identify one gap. Correct it immediately.
Hint:
Spotting early prevents suffering later.
Methodologies doHow® Level 4 – Improvement Seeker (FL – Function Leaders of TL)
At this level, I begin refining methods so they fit real-world conditions better.
Like tuning a musical instrument, I adjust the method gently without breaking its structure.
Reflection Question:
Do I actively improve how methodologies are used in my team?
Practice to Master:
Pick one method. Collect feedback from three colleagues. Refine one step for clarity or simplicity.
Hint:
A small improvement in clarity creates a big improvement in usage.
Methodologies doHow® Level 5 – Quick Fixer (BL – Business Leaders of FL)
Here, I learn to solve recurring problems quickly using the methodology — instead of depending purely on experience or intuition.
It is like fixing a loose wire with the right tool instead of jiggling it in hope.
Reflection Question:
Do I frequently use structured methodologies to fix issues fast and correctly?
Practice to Master:
For every issue this week, use a simple structured method (5-Why, Fishbone, or A3) before deciding the action.
Hint:
Speed without structure creates chaos; structure brings speed with accuracy.
Methodologies doHow® Level 6 – Kaizen Helper (CL – Company Leaders)
At this stage, I guide others in using methodologies — helping teams run Kaizens, solving problems, conducting 8Ds, doing RCAs, or using PDCA.
I become a coach, not just a user.
Reflection Question:
Do I help others apply methodologies effectively in their work?
Practice to Master:
Choose one colleague or team. Coach them in using a method correctly for one real problem.
Hint:
Teaching a method strengthens mastery — two victories for the price of one.
Methodologies doHow® Level 7 – Methodology Master
This is the highest level — where I design, integrate, and institutionalise methodologies across the organisation.
Like a martial arts master who teaches the philosophy behind each move, I create systems where methods guide behaviour naturally.
Reflection Question:
Have I internalised methodologies deeply enough to teach, adapt, and evolve them for the organisation?
Practice to Master:
Select one core methodology. Document its full A-to-Z flow. Train a group. Review results. Improve the method.
Hint:
Mastery is not using the method — mastery is becoming the method.
As I reflect across these seven levels, one insight becomes clear. Methodologies do not restrict creativity — they release it. Because when the mind is free from confusion, the imagination becomes free for innovation.
A structured method is like the alphabet.
Once I internalise A to Z, I can write poetry.
Until I internalise A to Z, I can only scribble.
Most people try to “use” methodologies.
But the real transformation happens when I internalise them — when I practice them rigorously, repeat them daily, reflect on them deeply, until they become part of my instinct. That is when the magic begins.
Practicing Methodologies doHow® for Prosperity
Like every doHow® capability, Methodologies doHow® is learned not through books but through practice.
The doHow® Readiness Assessment helps me see which level I am at and which level I must strengthen next.
As I grow from Tool User to Methodology Master, something powerful happens:
My decisions become sharper. My actions become consistent. My improvements become faster. My confidence becomes unshakeable. My team becomes stronger.
My contributions become visible. My prosperity becomes inevitable.
Because methodologies multiply my effectiveness. They reduce trial-and-error. They make me reliable. They make me valuable.
If Value doHow® creates meaning,
If Process doHow® creates flow,
If Standards doHow® creates stability,
If Ecosystem doHow® creates harmony…
…then Methodologies doHow® creates mastery.
Mastery of thought.
Mastery of practice.
Mastery of improvement.
Today, when I pick up any methodology — PDCA, Kaizen, A3, RCA, 5S — I ask myself:
“Have I internalised this from A to Z? Have I practiced it rigorously enough for it to become my natural reflex?”
Because when the methodology becomes part of me…
Excellence becomes effortless.
Growth becomes continuous.
Prosperity becomes natural.
Happy Reading!
