B01. Awaken Purpose and Growth at Work: The Spark Behind Every Great Team

In my previous article, From Accountability to Prosperity: Why Great Teams are Irreplaceable,” I shared why lasting prosperity is never created by a few brilliant individuals but by teams that trust one another, take ownership and work together towards a common purpose.

Yet that naturally led me to another question.

What creates great teams?

After spending more than three decades working with organisations across manufacturing, engineering and services in India, Germany and Brazil, I have realised that organisations rarely become world-class before their people do. Machines can be purchased. Technology can be copied. Capital can be borrowed. But people who think differently, work purposefully and continually improve themselves cannot be bought. They must be developed.

That understanding led me to create the doHow® Developer—a practical journey of lifelong development built on one simple belief:

Small daily improvements create extraordinary lifelong results.

Unlike traditional training programmes that people attend once and soon forget, the doHow® Developer encourages growth through a simple daily rhythm—watch, understand, practise and reflect. Day after day, these small improvements quietly become better habits, stronger character and greater contribution.

Over the coming weeks I will share a series of articles on the eighteen doHow® Developer Enablers, arranged in three simple stages.

The first stage, Build Yourself, consists of ten Basic Enablers that help every individual become dependable, disciplined and purpose driven.

The second stage, Build Your Team, introduces three Prosperity Enablers that help teams execute consistently and achieve results together.

Finally, the third stage, Build Your Organisation, presents five Samuthána Enablers that help create organisations where learning, ownership and continual improvement simply become the normal way of working.

This week we begin with the foundation upon which every other enabler rests.

B01. Awaken Purpose and Growth at Work.

Because before we improve our skills, our systems or our organisations, we must first answer one simple question.

Why do I come to work every day?

When Work Has No Purpose

During my career I have visited hundreds of factories. Some were filled with energy. Others were filled with silence. The difference was rarely the machines.

It was the people.

In some factories I saw people walking faster than the conveyor belts, solving problems before they became crises and helping one another without being asked.

In others, I saw people simply waiting for instructions.

Nobody wanted to make a decision. Nobody wanted to take responsibility. Everyone was busy. Yet very little was improving.

Over the years I realised something important.

People do not lose passion overnight.

They lose it one day at a time.

  • When they stop understanding why their work matters.
  • When their ideas are ignored.
  • When mistakes are punished instead of discussed.
  • When reviews focus only on faults instead of learning.
  • When every day feels exactly like yesterday.

Eventually, work becomes nothing more than a monthly salary.

The Real Problem Is Usually Not the People

Many organisations believe they have a motivation problem. From my experience, they usually have a systems problem. People naturally want to do meaningful work.

Especially the younger generation.

Today, very few people are satisfied with simply being told what to do. They want to understand why. When people understand the purpose behind their work, commitment becomes voluntary instead of forced.

Unfortunately, many organisations still spend far more time teaching procedures than explaining purpose.

Performance discussions revolve around numbers. Very little time is spent discussing growth. Training teaches technical skills. Almost no time is spent developing better thinking. Managers often react quickly when something goes wrong.

Soon people discover that remaining silent is safer than speaking honestly.

Without even realising it, organisations slowly replace curiosity with caution. Learning with compliance. Ownership with fear.

One belief has become stronger every year of my professional life.

People perform at their best when expectations are clear, responsibilities are understood and they feel safe enough to speak openly.

Psychological safety does not mean lowering standards. It means creating an environment where people can raise concerns, admit mistakes and ask questions without fear of humiliation. That is why accountability and psychological safety are not opposites.

They strengthen each other.

When responsibilities, authority and review mechanisms are clearly defined, people actually become more confident because they know what success looks like.

  • Trust grows.
  • Learning grows.
  • Confidence grows.
  • Performance follows.

Growth Begins With Reflection

One lesson has changed my own life. Experience alone does not make us wiser. Some people repeat the same experience for twenty years. Others learn something new every single day. The difference is reflection.

That is why the doHow® Developer does not stop with a video or an assessment.

Every learning module ends with one simple daily practice.

  •
  •

  •

Small improvements made consistently are far more powerful than occasional bursts of enthusiasm. Real transformation is created by changing daily routines—not by delivering or listening another motivational speech.

A Simple Practice That Can Change Your Life

Before ending your working day, spend just a few quiet minutes asking yourself:

  • Did I work today with purpose or merely complete tasks?
  • Did I connect today’s work to a better future for myself, my family, my team and my organisation?
  • Did I treat people with openness, respect and honesty?
  • Did I make it easier for someone to speak openly with me?
  • Did I deliberately improve at least one habit, one skill or one way of thinking today?
  • Did I take ownership instead of finding someone to blame?
  • Did my work today leave people better than I found them?

There are no marks. No manager will review your answers. Yet these few minutes may become the most valuable investment you make in your own future.

Because every honest answer shapes tomorrow’s behaviour. And tomorrow’s behaviour slowly shapes our character.

Purpose Changes Everything

When people begin working with purpose, remarkable things quietly happen.

  • Supervisors become coaches.
  • Managers become mentors.
  • Teams start solving problems instead of protecting themselves.
  • Departments begin helping one another instead of blaming one another.
  • Learning becomes continuous.
  • Innovation becomes natural.
  • Customers receive better quality.
  • Businesses become more productive.
  • Families experience greater stability.

People return home not only with a salary but also with the satisfaction of knowing their work made someone’s life better.

That, to me, is the beginning of real prosperity.

As I look back on my own journey, I have become convinced that prosperity is not built by extraordinary people doing extraordinary things. It is built by ordinary people choosing to do ordinary things extraordinarily well, every single day.

Because every great organisation begins with one purposeful person.
